Plans underway to upgrade Cambridge city centre

The Guildhall, Market Square and Corn Exchange are set for a facelift.

It's understood £20-million of the city council's general reserve have been set aside.

However, the plans have been accused of coming "out of the blue" for people in the city.

Concerns were raised at a meeting of the city council’s strategy and resources scrutiny committee on Monday January 15 2024.

There were calls for residents to be given a chance to provide their input on a new "civic quarter".

Simon Smith, executive councillor for finance and resources:

"Basically, the civic quarter is a working title, that is all it is, for communication.

"What we are talking about is the refurbishment of the market, which has been subject to extensive discussion and an agreed vision.

"Introducing the Corn Exchange is to realise the substantial capital spending requirements there. 

"It is a listed building that needs refurbishment and restoration and due care and attention."

Councillor Smith said proposed works on the Guildhall had also been included in this project "parcel".

A report, to be be presented later this month, is set to have more information about the work needed to prepare the business case.

The council said the required consultation would take place, as the proposal is "for the community".
