Cambridge cancer hospital gets government backing

Funding has been confirmed and a green light given for a Cambridge cancer hospital.

The Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital was one of the 40 hospitals chosen by the former Conservative government to receive funding under its New Hospitals Programme in 2020.

However, in July 2024, new Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the delivery of these hospitals was "wildly off track" and announced a review of the programme.

On Monday 20 January, funding was agreed and the Addenbrooke's Hospital scheme was finally given the go-ahead.

Labour MP for Cambridge, Daniel Zeichner:

"I am absolutely delighted. Today is the news that residents in Cambridge have been waiting to hear for far too long.

"For years we have been led up the garden path with false promises from the Tories about when this desperately needed scheme will finally be underway in our community.

"It is thanks to this Labour Government that we now have a timetable for delivery so patients finally get the care they deserve."

The new hospital aims to "bring together clinical and research expertise in a new world-class hospital", in the hope of being able to detect cancer earlier and treat it more precisely.

The scheme will be part of Wave 1 of the New Hospitals Programme and construction will commence in 2025-26.
